HAMPI - OGGI PATRIMONIO DELL'UNESCO - IERI PARADISO DEGLI HIPPIES

ita
Hampi 2013/ 14

On the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the state of Karnataka in southern India it appears as a mirage: Hampi, located among the ruins of the ancient city of Vijayanagara, today belongs to the UNESCO heritage.
In the past it was frequented by Sadhu and hippies in the beat generation years, who chose this place for its beauty linked to the rhythm of the earth and nature. Over time Indian families from the poorest areas have settled in the archaeological area, building their abusive homes among majestic temples and buildings of the past, improvising small guest-houses and restaurants for travelers and pilgrims.
In 2013 UNESCO began the "Hampi" project, on the renewal of the territory, breaking down all that was abusive inside the bazaar and archaeological areas, leaving the population in turmoil and in serious economic difficulties. Today Hampi, looks like an open-air construction site, the workers work tirelessly night and day to demolish and work on the construction of a freeway, to the new resorts and shopping centers aimed at elite tourism.
In the meantime, the Hampi government has outlined an unclaimed area for displaced families who had a small commercial activity in the archaeological area. The works have started and today in 2014 only one building is habitable.
Copyright Shobha:
He worked for years on Hampi, collecting stories of ordinary everyday life.
In 2013 he continued his story with the beginning of the demolition of the illegal places in Hampi.

The kitchen was the heart of these small abusive houses: altars, divinities and photos of ancestors near the hob, testified to the memory of the different ethnic groups that had come to Hampi.
copyright Soraya Gullifa:
In 2012, a year before the destruction he photographed the kitchens of these small houses, unaware that they would have been demolished in 2013.
