BENVENUTO RUMI QUESTA E' LA TUA HOUSEBOAT.
L'houseboat di legno galleggia come un fiore di loto ai bordi del fiume Jhelum, nella bellissima città di Srinagar, le donne giovani ed anziane si preparano per accompagnare la futura mamma nell'ospedale materno pubblico della città. Si spera e si sogna che sia un bimbo, un erede degno e forte per continuare il lavoro di Sanghit; il padre di casa.
Per il padre di famiglia non avere un erede è una vera sfortuna, una minaccia; la moglie non può avere figli dopo l'ultimo dei quattro parti cesari, lo racconta mentre mi mostra la sua grande cicatrice sulla pancia.
Sanghit il padre, incarica e promette ad un cugino lontano che vive nelle montagne dell'Himalaya soldi e protezione per tutta la vita, solo se si sposa con una giovane cugina della famiglia della moglie da lui scelta, con la promessa di sposarsi e partorire un figlio maschio; il tanto desiderato erede. Ma se fosse nato una femmina, non se ne sarebbe fatto proprio nulla.
Il cugino accetta questo contratto familiare e presto si sposa con la giovane Amma.
Per un mese circa, sono stata ospite dentro la loro houseboat, raccontando e condividendo le loro gioie e dolori; i pomeriggi passati insieme a raccontare e ascoltare le loro storie fumando Narghilè, mentre le donne di famiglia con grande curiosità' mi tempestavano di domande su usi e costumi europei. Una grande famiglia matriarcale mussulmana, allegra e unita, con i giusti soldi per vivere.
Anche Amma la cugina, la più giovane delle donne, accetta il contratto di matrimonio e si sposa il cugino, e se le fosse nato il figlio maschio, lo avrebbe dato in affidamento al cugino Sanghit e a tutta la famiglia fino alla sua maggiore eta',con la promessa che gli sposi avrebbero ricevuto una barca in regalo, dove vivere vicino a loro e per vedere crescere l'erede.
Amma è incinta: Io arrivo un mese prima del parto e mi sistemo in una piccola stanza nella loro houseboat.
Proprio all'inizio dei monsoni, quando il cielo è carico di nuvole con l'aria un po' torbida.
Arrivano le doglie, Amma e' accompagnata solo dalle donne di famiglia, donne in burka, l' ospedale materno della città e' vicino: c’è tensione, si cerca un’infermiera, il posto letto, intorno ci sono tante giovani donne in attesa di partorire che aspettano il proprio turno, ma anche mamme con bimbi appena nati. I letti sono fatiscenti, polvere e odore forte di siero e latte riempiono gli stanzoni affollati, Amma è dolce, silenziosa, arresa è pronta, vuole partorire. Con cura e amore viene accudita, iniziano le doglie mentre viene nutrita e lavata come un piccolo uccellino, le donne di famiglia le stanno intorno, la stanza dove sta il suo letto è piccola, una finestra sbarrata fa entrare luce sul suo volto sofferente.
La tensione del figlio maschio è nell'aria più che mai, le aspettative, enormi.Gli occhi di Amma sono felice e avvolte tristi.
In onore del maschio si annuncia festa per tutto il mese, gli invitati sarebbero stati accolti da tutte le parti del kashmir con dolci e cibi freschi, musiche e balli, in dono le pecore da scuoiare e preghiere al Minareto. C’era una gran eccitazione tra tutti e io ero con loro.
Dopo ore di travaglio, Amma partorisce un maschio di un chilo e mezzo che non riesce ad allattare perché la mamma non produce latte ed è troppo magra; la festa e i sorrisi si contengono, bisogna aspettare almeno un giorno. Si rientra a casa lo stesso giorno sotto un cielo nero e cupo, ci sono i vestitini pronti, il berretto, e le scarpine, mentre le donne si mettono in cerchio intorno al bimbo e cantano canti propiziatori, la più grande delle figlie spella una gallina per farne brodo, e le anziane fumano il Narghilè.
Mentre tutto sembra andar per il meglio qualcosa va storto: il giorno dopo, tante le coccole e sorrisi di felicità per il piccolo Rumi, ma non c’è più nulla da fare, la seconda notte mentre dorme stretto nel petto della madre Rumi muore.
Dagli accertamenti e dal colore del bimbo i medici dichiarano che è stata un’ epatite fulminante. Dopo la morte del bimbo sono corsa via, le urla di dolore erano strazianti.
Non ho voluto insistere nel raccontare la loro tragedia in atto, per rispettare il loro dolore!
Il nome Rumi è un nome Sufi che ricorda il grande poeta, Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, da questa famiglia tanto amato.
